Why Sarah
ANSAOS is named after my younger sister, Sarah. She passed away at the age of seven. This is her story - and mine.
"I fought to stay with her. That was never a decision. It was just what you do."
Sarah was mentally and physically handicapped. When the care system separated our family, I was four years old. At nine, I was moved to foster parents. But I refused to go to a normal children's home - because Sarah wasn't in a normal children's home. She was with other children like her, children who communicated through sounds rather than words.
I fought to stay with her. After a lot of battles with the system, they let me. I grew up surrounded by children who couldn't speak in full sentences. I didn't learn to read or write properly. I didn't care. She was my sister.
When Sarah became ill with leukaemia, the system moved me on. I visited her in hospital whenever I could. I have two photographs from those visits. They are the most important things I own.
Nobody told me when she died. I found out two weeks later. I never went to the funeral. I never got to say goodbye. I never got to tell her I loved her.
Sarah was seven years old.
I carried that silence for a long time. Then I started building - teaching myself to read properly, to write, to code, to think in systems. And when it came time to name the part of ANSAOS that greets people, that never leaves, that routes and protects and advocates and makes sure no one falls through the cracks -
There was only one name.
Sarah doesn't just answer questions. She listens. She makes sure the right people connect with the right help at the right time. She never abandons anyone. She never would have.
